Nonprofit Accounting
Financials your board actually understands.
Nonprofit accounting isn't just business accounting with different labels. Fund balances, restricted gifts, grant reporting, board packets, and a treasurer who needs the numbers to make sense. Most accountants don't do this work. I've spent more than thirty years doing it, from inside nonprofits and beside them.
Every event we host is designed with intention, from the atmosphere we create to the way each session flows.
I've sat in every seat at the nonprofit table
A partner in your organization, not just your books.
I didn't come to nonprofit accounting from the outside. I started my career in the sector and have spent more than thirty years in and around mission-driven organizations.
I've been a board member, an Executive Director, and a Treasurer. I've filed Form 1023 applications to help new organizations earn their tax-exempt status. And as a fractional CFO for a nonprofit accounting firm, I led a team of five accountants serving sixty-five nonprofit clients, so I've seen nearly every situation a small nonprofit can face.
That mix matters. I know what a board needs to see, what a funder expects in a report, and what keeps an Executive Director up at night, because I've been the person in each of those roles.
I'm a licensed CPA in Maryland and New Mexico, and I work remotely with nonprofits nationwide.
"My job is to turn complexity into clarity. Accurate books are where it starts. Knowing what they mean is where it pays off."
Nonprofits answer to boards, funders, and the IRS, all at once. The books have to do more than balance. They have to tell a clear story to people who don't speak accounting.
Here's what I handle that general bookkeepers often miss:
Fund accounting. Tracking restricted and unrestricted net assets correctly, so you always know what you can actually spend.
Grant and funder reporting. Reports that match what your funders require, ready when they're due.
Board-ready financials. Statements your board can read and act on, explained in plain language.
Program-level tracking. Knowing which programs are sustainable and which need attention.
Reserve and cash flow planning. Keeping the mission funded through lean months and timing gaps.
Coordination with your auditor and tax preparer. A clean handoff at year-end, with no surprises.
Where I fit on compliance
Most small nonprofits don't need a full-time finance department. They need clean, audit-ready books and someone who speaks the language of compliance.
I keep your financials accurate and organized all year so that Form 990 preparation, audits, and grant reviews are straightforward rather than stressful. I coordinate directly with your tax preparer and auditor, and I prepare the schedules and reports they need. For organizations just getting started, I've also helped file Form 1023 to establish tax-exempt status.
If you need a referral for 990 preparation or an audit, I can point you to trusted partners. My role is to make sure the underlying numbers are right and ready.

I focus on small and growing nonprofits, typically with annual budgets between $100,000 and $700,000. Organizations in this range are often too big to run on a volunteer treasurer and a spreadsheet, but not yet ready for a full-time finance hire. That's exactly where I fit.
